Utilities to study math with Linux

  ·   2 min read

The truth is that it’s really hard for me to do something without my computer, I’m too distracted. So, I came with this thought of how to use Linux to my benefit.

The first thing is to have a nice desktop that allows segmented work areas, in my case Gnome 3 fits perfect.

MyPaint

There is, then, this great app called MyPaint, that is intended to painting, but it also could be use, as in this case, study. In the following video I show how I use it for that. I also need a graphic tablet that you can get for $50 USD. The good thing with Linux is that you don’t need drivers to get that working, just plug it and use it. For the installation just type in a console this:

1$ sudo apt-get install mypaint

Here I show how to use MyPaint to do some math:

Maxima

Maxima is a version of MACSYMA system, developed by the MIT, modified to run under common Lisp. It’s an interactive expert system and also a programming environment for numeric and symbolic mathematical man manipulation.

Gvim with latex support

In a previous video, I explained how to install latex support for GVim. So in the next one I show how to go from what I did in ‘paper’ to latex.
